For women with endometriosis, GYN appointments can bring a wave of emotions, dread, fear, anxiety, and even trauma. What should be a routine checkup often feels anything but routine when you live with chronic pelvic pain, uncomfortable exams, and the worry of being dismissed or misunderstood by your provider.
You’re not alone in this, and you absolutely deserve compassionate.
Working with my clients as an Endometriosis Coach, I help support them on how to prepare for appointments, what to say to your provider, and ways to make the experience more comfortable both physically and emotionally.
First let's understand why GYN Appointments Can Feel So Difficult for Endometriosis
If you’ve ever found yourself putting off your GYN exam, it’s not because you’re lazy or irresponsible, it’s simply because these exams can be triggering for so many reasons:
Fear of pain during the pelvic exam or Pap smear
Previous negative experiences with providers who dismissed or minimized symptoms
Anxiety around undressing, being vulnerable, or not being believed
Fear of bad news, such as worsening symptoms or new findings
Emotional distress, especially if pelvic exams have been traumatic
Understanding these fears is the first step to taking your power back!!!
What You Can Do Before the Appointment
Here’s how to set yourself up for a better experience:
1. Schedule strategically
Choose a time of day when you feel your best, maybe earlier in the morning when stress is lower.
Avoid scheduling during your period unless your provider specifically requests it.
2. Request a provider who is knowledgeable of Endometriosis.
If you're seeing a new GYN, ask when booking if the provider has experience with endometriosis or pelvic pain conditions.
You can also request a provider who is female if that makes you more comfortable.
3. Bring a “medical resume”
Write down your current symptoms, history with endo, previous surgeries or treatments, and any questions you want answered.
This can help keep the conversation focused and reduce the stress of remembering everything on the spot.
4. Practice self-care beforehand
A warm bath or heating pad the night before
Gentle stretching or breathwork
Journaling about your fears and intentions for the appointment
Tips for Getting Through the Exam with Less Pain and Anxiety
Your comfort matters. These strategies can help:
Use relaxation techniques
Deep belly breathing helps relax the pelvic floor and reduce anxiety.
Ask for accommodations
Ask to use the smallest speculum available.
Request that the exam be done in a semi-reclined or side-lying position (if the provider allows it).
Bring a support person or even wear earbuds with calming music or meditations.
Use visualization
Picture yourself in a calm, safe place.
Imagine your breath as a wave of warmth relaxing your pelvic area.
Be gentle with yourself afterward
Plan something soothing for after the appointment like a walk, a warm drink, a chat with a friend.
Give yourself space to decompress. These appointments take emotional energy.
As an Endometriosis Coach, providing support to my clients is my top priority. I would love to hear ways you have found to make your exam easier with endo? I’d love to hear about them.
